Plagiarism Checker with Percentage and Sources
This plagiarism checker compares your essay, assignment, research paper, thesis, or dissertation with real sources and shows you exactly what matches. Your overall similarity percentage is free. For a one-time $5, the full report adds every matched source with links, each match highlighted in your document, and a downloadable PDF similarity report.
There is no word limit. Paste your text or upload a PDF, DOCX, or TXT file, and the plagiarism detector checks it sentence by sentence. Long documents are checked in parts, so you can scan a full dissertation in one go.
How the Plagiarism Checker Works
1. It searches real sources. For each sentence, the checker searches an exact phrase across web pages (Google results), Wikipedia, and over 250 million scholarly works indexed by OpenAlex.
2. It compares the wording. Candidate pages are opened and compared with your sentence word by word. A sentence is flagged only when its wording really appears in the source.
3. It sorts matches into groups. Each match is checked for an in-text citation and quotation marks, so you can see which matches are a problem and which are correctly cited.
4. It builds your similarity report. You see your similarity percentage for free. Unlock the full report to get the matched sources ranked by size, colour-coded highlights, and a PDF report to download or share with your tutor.
How to Check Plagiarism Online in 4 Steps
- Add your document: paste text or upload a PDF, Word (DOCX), or TXT file. Files are read in your browser.
- Choose sources and filters: search web pages and publications, and exclude your bibliography, quoted text, or small matches.
- Add your own files (optional): compare against earlier drafts or past assignments to catch self-plagiarism.
- See your score, then unlock: your similarity percentage is free. Unlock the full report for $5 to see every source, click any highlight for a fix, and download the PDF.
Understanding Your Similarity Report
The overall similarity percentage is the share of your checked words that match a source. A score is not a verdict of plagiarism. Correctly quoted and cited text, common phrases, and technical terms all match too. The match groups show which matches need attention:
| Match group | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Not cited or quoted | Matching text with no citation and no quotation marks | Quote and cite, or paraphrase and cite. Fix these first. |
| Missing quotation marks | Cited, but still word-for-word close to the source | Add quotation marks or rewrite in your own words |
| Missing citation | In quotation marks, but no in-text citation | Add author, year, and page number |
| Cited and quoted | Handled correctly | Nothing, but keep direct quotations short |
What is an acceptable similarity percentage?
Many universities treat a similarity index under about 15% as low, but there is no universal cut-off. Thresholds vary by university, department, and assignment, so check your module handbook. What matters most is that every match is properly quoted and cited.

Based on each tool's public plagiarism checker page, checked October 2026. "Not listed" means the feature is not described for the free version. Plans change, so check before you rely on them.
Is this a Turnitin alternative?
It is a free way to check your work before you submit, not a copy of Turnitin. Turnitin also searches paywalled journals and a private database of student papers that no public tool can access, so your scores will differ. Use this checker to find and fix uncited passages early. Then let your university's Turnitin check confirm the final version.
Self-Plagiarism Checker: Compare Two Documents
Reusing your own earlier work without permission is self-plagiarism, and Turnitin can match it against your past submissions. Open "Compare with my own documents" and add up to five files, such as an earlier draft, a previous module's assignment, or a published paper of yours.
The comparison runs inside your browser, so these files are never uploaded. Matches appear as "Your own documents" in the report, next to web and publication matches.
Plagiarism Checker for Essays, Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations
- Essays and assignments: catch missing citations before you submit.
- Research papers and journal articles: check your literature review against published work before peer review.
- Theses and dissertations: check the whole document at once, with no word limit, and exclude the bibliography automatically.
- CIPD and MBA projects: make sure models, frameworks, and definitions are cited, not copied.
- Blog posts and web content: find duplicate content copied from other websites.
Types of Plagiarism and How to Avoid Them
- Direct plagiarism: copying text word for word without quotation marks or a citation.
- Paraphrasing plagiarism: changing a few words but keeping the source's structure, with no citation.
- Mosaic plagiarism (patchwriting): mixing copied phrases with your own words.
- Self-plagiarism: reusing your own earlier work without permission.
- Accidental plagiarism: a forgotten citation or a quote without quotation marks.
How to reduce your similarity score
Start with the "Not cited or quoted" group. For each match, either put the exact words in quotation marks and cite them, or rewrite the idea in your own words and structure and still cite it. Shorten long direct quotations, and make sure your reference list matches your in-text citations. Need help? Use our free paraphrasing tool and citation generator.
