What Is a Word Counter?
A word counter is a free online tool that counts the words in your text as you type or paste. This word counter also works as a character counter, sentence counter, paragraph counter, and reading time calculator, so you can check every length requirement in one place.
US students use it to hit essay word limits, stay under Common App and scholarship essay caps, and check discussion posts before submitting on Canvas or Blackboard. Writers and marketers use it to check character counts for meta descriptions, X posts, and LinkedIn updates.
How to Use the Word Count Tool
Step 1: Add your text. Type, paste, or upload a PDF, DOCX, or TXT file. You can also drag a file straight into the box. The word count updates instantly with no button to press.
Step 2: Set your word limit. Enter your target or tap a preset such as 1,500 words or the 650-word Common App limit. Switch to Character limit for meta descriptions and social posts. The bar turns green when you are within range and red when you go over.
Step 3: Exclude citations if your rubric does. Many professors do not count in-text citations or the reference list toward the word limit. Tick Exclude citations & reference list to remove APA and MLA citations such as (Smith, 2021) or (Smith 45), IEEE numbers like [3], and everything after a References, Works Cited, or Bibliography heading.
Step 4: Improve the draft. Check the readability score, scan keyword density for overused words, and fix long sentences flagged by the sentence length checker. Clean up spacing, change case, or find and replace words without leaving the page.
Readability Score, Keyword Density, and Sentence Length
Flesch Reading Ease and Grade Level
The Flesch Reading Ease score runs from 0 to 100, and higher means easier to read. Most academic writing scores 30 to 50, while web content aims for 60 or above. The Flesch-Kincaid grade level shows the US school grade a reader needs to understand your text.
Keyword Density Checker
Keyword density shows how often a word or phrase appears as a percentage of total words. Switch between single words and two- or three-word phrases to spot repetition in essays, or to keep an SEO keyword around 1 to 2 percent without keyword stuffing.
Sentence Length Checker
Sentences of 7 to 25 words are easiest to follow. The checker groups your sentences by length and lists any over 30 words. Click a long sentence to jump to it in your text and split it in two.
Word Counter FAQs
Does this word counter match Microsoft Word and Google Docs?+
Yes, very closely. Like Microsoft Word and Google Docs, it counts words by splitting text on spaces, so hyphenated words count as one. Small differences can appear with em dashes, URLs, or special characters, so check with your submission system if a limit is strict.
Do citations and references count toward my word count?+
It depends on your professor or program. Many US courses exclude the reference list, and some also exclude in-text citations. Tick Exclude citations & reference list to see both numbers, and check your rubric or syllabus for the rule that applies.
How is reading time calculated?+
Reading time divides your word count by an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute. You can change both speeds, and actual times vary with text difficulty and the reader.
How many pages is 1,000 words?+
About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, the default for most US college papers. Fonts, headings, and block quotes change the total, so go by word count when your rubric gives one. For any other length, use our
free words to pages converter.
Can I check character count for a Common App essay or social media post?+
Yes. Use the Common App 650 or UC PIQ 350 presets for word limits, or switch to Character limit and choose meta description (160), X post (280), Instagram caption (2,200), or LinkedIn post (3,000).
Can I upload a Word document or PDF?+
Yes. Click Upload or drag a DOCX, PDF, or TXT file into the box. The file is read inside your browser and is never uploaded to a server. Scanned PDFs that contain images instead of text cannot be counted.
Is my text saved or stored anywhere?+
Your text never leaves your device. All counting happens in your browser. If Auto-save is on, a copy is kept only in this browser so you do not lose your draft when you close the tab. Turn Auto-save off or click Clear to remove it.
