How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
Three inputs, one answer. Enter your current course grade (your Canvas or Blackboard grades page shows it, but check it is not already counting a zero for the final), enter how much your final exam is worth from your syllabus (usually 20 to 40%), and set the course grade you want. The Final Grade Formula
The math behind the calculator is one line: Required Final Score = (Target Grade minus Current Grade times (100% minus Final Weight)) divided by Final Weight.
Worked example: your current grade is 84%, the final is worth 30%, and you want an 87% (B+). Your non-final work contributes 84 times 0.70, which is 58.8 points. You need 87 minus 58.8, which is 28.2 points, from the final. Divide 28.2 by 0.30 and you need a 94% on the final exam. The calculator does this instantly and converts the result to a letter grade.
Understanding Your Result Colors
Green result: The required score is achievable with solid preparation. Stay focused and you'll hit your target.
Amber result: Challenging but achievable. You'll need to perform above your current average, so start studying early and consider extra support.
Red result: Very difficult or mathematically impossible. This is the time to ask your professor about extra credit, check whether your lowest test grade gets dropped, or adjust your target to the best reachable grade shown in the what-if table.
Final Grade Calculator FAQs for US Students
What do I need on my final to get an A?+
Enter your current grade, your final's weight, and 93% (the typical A cutoff at US universities, or 90% for an A-) as your target. The calculator gives your exact required score. As a rule of thumb, the more your final is worth, the less perfect your final needs to be to move your grade, and the quick target buttons cover the standard US letter cutoffs used at schools from Purdue to Boston University.
My required grade is over 100%. What does that mean?+
Your target is mathematically out of reach on exam performance alone. The result panel shows your maximum possible grade with a perfect final, and the what-if table shows the best letter grade you can still lock in. From there: ask your professor about extra credit or a curve, check your syllabus for dropped-lowest-grade policies, and set your sights on the highest reachable target. Where do I find how much my final exam is worth?+
Your course syllabus lists the grading breakdown, usually as weighted categories like homework, quizzes, midterms, participation, and the final exam. Most finals are worth 20 to 40% of the course grade, though some professors go to 50%. If the syllabus is unclear, email your professor or TA. Guessing the weight is the most common reason students get a wrong answer from any final grade calculator.
My class uses points, not percentages. Can I still use this?+
Yes, with one conversion. In a points-based course, divide the points you have earned by the points possible so far to get your current grade percentage, and divide the final exam points by total course points to get its weight. For example, 450 of 520 points so far is a current grade of 86.5%, and a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is a 20% weight. Enter those two numbers and the calculator works normally.
Does my Canvas grade already include the final?+
Check before you calculate. Canvas and Blackboard usually exclude ungraded work from your running total, which is what you want. But if your instructor has entered a zero placeholder for the final, your displayed grade is artificially low. Use the grade that reflects only completed, graded work, or ask your TA which number is correct.
